From the diary of invention – a peek into the universe of KiNo LiVe.

KiNo-0011179

At the core of the live KiNo sound is a plethora of software and hardware used to route signal, mix the levels of instruments, and control the delicate balance between the straight audio (dry) and the audio with effects applied (wet).  In the picture above, we see several FU-2s, custom analog filter units built by Jeff Blenkinsopp.  Below that are two MOTU 828 interfaces whose DC-coupled outputs allow us to transform MIDI data from software into control voltage used to power the VCAs in the effects units.  One Mackie mixer is shown in the picture, and Justin has another to submix his keyboards and control aux sends.

Jeff assumes a prime listening position while Alan configures the software to emit precise control voltage pulses through the audio interfaces.

The live KiNo show has required many modifications of Jeff’s legendary FU-2 units.  In the photo above, Jeff is installing VCAs so that the control voltage sent out of the 828s can automate the parameters in real time.

Alan and Jeff listen while Justin’s keyboards run through the effects units, powered by the control voltage, and configured via MIDI.  All of the sound is analog, with the MIDI controlling the parameters on the outboard gear.
